August 2025: Matt Recommends

For whatever reason I do find the summer months to be a little light when it comes to new releases. This August I've got three releases that I'd like to highlight for you. Quite a mix too. With a common thread. Before we get started however, this month's playlist has doom, thrash, nu-metal, hardcore, and more.



Swaamp - II: Trippy, spacey, psychedelic journey lasting for an hour and a half. Blissed out meditations that rock, man. They have THREE monthly listeners on Spotify. Let's make some noise for Swaamp! And go listen dammit! (on Bandcamp though)



Tube Warmers - Volume 2: Not terribly different than Swaamp in general tone but more chill and less rock. Definitely a trip. Easy enough for far out background music too.



Tumanduumband - Hail Satan, Triumph Awaits: The name says it all. Satanic and triumphant. The aptly named Tumanduumband (a two-man doom band) move some heavyweight air plying a sinister style of droning instrumental doom maliciously stitched with dark samples. It is the sound of evil wrapped in a fog as heavy and magical as vaporized mercury descending and spreading through the underworld. Dance with the devil. It takes two to doom.



There you have it. Three trippy recommendations from August of 2025.

Album of the Month - November 2024: Vessel - 'The Somnifer'

I'm publishing this even later this month. Wow. Things have been going on, ya know? Anyway, in the new year I was going to change this format up a bit so this month will be a hybrid. November was a decent month. Better than decent, I suppose. I didn't add too many albums to the spreadsheet but most of the ones I did add were pretty good. The one I listened to the most was definitely 'The Somnifer' by Vessel.

The Aussie band created a cool concept album around dreaming, to be super vague, that's sparse on the vocals but effective. Through the 10 songs Vessel serve up different styles of doom to get their feelings across. My favourite is "Rapid Eye Movement". It makes the album for me. It's kind of lumbering and definitely spacey, and it's one with vocals. "Walk through the space between atoms" was the kicker. It's the kind of statement I think about often enough. Since I'm keeping this short, it's a great album. You should listen to it. Many times.



Now for the other part of the hybrid. Sharing just one album that deserves it is weak. I want to share more. Because I have awesome taste. 2023: My Favourites

Man, the evolution continues. Or is it a de-evolution? Not society. That's totally fucked. I mean my music listening habits. Long gone are the days of knowing every sub-genre. Or trying to anyway. I really, really feel most at home when I'm enjoying stoner rock and metal, doom, stoner doom, sludge, psych, heavy psych, more and more prog, shit like that. I think I listened to one black metal album all year? ('Blackbraid II') Thrash? Probably just Slayer (more or less) thanks to the Talkin' Slayer podcast by D.X. Ferris. As for death metal well, most of that input was in the live setting. Anyhoo.

Once I got down to it putting together this year's list wasn't so hard. I value my time to the point of not wasting any of it if the tunes don't resonate. That made that long list shorter and the cuts easier to make. There are no consequences. Go with your gut. Music is transcendence. Music is prayer. Music is salvation.

Nebular Nine: November 2023

Music is a drug. A strong, addicting, healing drug.

Here's what I medicated with most in November.

Ok, so obviously not all of these were November releases but thats not how this works anyway. 

'Lords of Data' by Astral Hand came out in March. Too bad I didn't know about the psychedelic doom within back then. The Anuseye album came out in October. It's pretty cool. Same with Massive Hassle. That album cover is VERY deceptive. It's not black or death metal at all! Uh, the heavy ass Tortuga album was also October. And the Ufomammut EP. And the Howling Giant. They were all late October, okay? 

November's best is the self-titled Psychic Trash debut. Bear in mind this is basically (literally) Wizard Rifle with a different name. With all the gun violence in the US they thought it best to change monikers. Same weirdo duo though! Maybe a little less weird.

Ethereal Tomb released their album in September. It's great. They're even better live. Show report upcoming.

Last but not least is the reissue of Hermano's 'Only a Suggestion'. I suggest you listen to it.

2021: My Favourites

The end of 2017 was bad. 2018 was subsequently sad. 2019 was shitty. 2020 was really shitty. (There was also the pandemic.) 2021 was even shittier. (There was also the pandemic.) 2022 is shaping up to be pretty shitty. (There will also be the pandemic.) Through it all was the music. Everyone has their escape, their grounding point, their way to drown out the tinnitus. However, the music that gets me through the good times and the bad has changed quite a bit. In 2018 I attended Migration Fest which was predominantly black and death metal and never wanted to miss a second of it. By 2021 I barely listened to black or death metal at all. Or thrash. At least not anything new. Nope. It was all about the doom, the stoner, the rock, the sludge, the psych. With exceptions. Nothing too violent or aggressive. I don't have time for that. I needed chill. I needed vibe. I needed groove. I needed dark and slow. I needed stuff to take my mind away. So, here's what filled those needs the most in 2021! 

Instead of a numbered list, I used three tiers for the top 25 albums. After the top tier is a big ole list of albums that I felt obligated to list because they were also pretty damn good.

Bedroom Rehab Corporation - Fortunate Some

I typically don't get a lot of unsolicited emails from bands asking me to check their stuff out. I often don't have the time anyway. But Bedroom Rehab Corporation got my attention first with their name. Then the professionalism of their contact. Then their awesome one-sheet pdf which included the killer album cover by Liz Walshak. Then the video included for "When All You've Got is a Hammer". Package that all up and Fortunate Some couldn't be more suited to my interests. So first of all, kudos to you, BRC for promoting yourselves excellently.

But the music is even more excellent. This bass/vocals (Adam Wujtewicz) and drums (Megan Killimade) duo from Connecticut plays a style of psychedelic doom full of power, passion and of course, fuzz.

I'm gonna go track-by-track on this one because there's only four in a near-perfect runtime of about 28 minutes, and it's my blog.

We start of with the shortest track in "Riddles of Wind and Time". Right away we're treated to how Adam can manipulate his bass. At times it sounds more like a piano than a bass. In a device the band employs often those quieter bass moments slink under his vocals while Meghan hammers and pops higher in the mix. The sinister doom stalks the listener with devious eyes and huge riffs layered with a descendent melody. It's hypnotic, mean and leads into the next track well.

"When All You've Got is a Hammer" is super catchy. The chorus will be stuck in my head forever. "When all you've got is a hammer/It becomes all you need/All I've got is this hammer/Everything looks like nails to me" sums it right up.

Again they use a quiet/loud dynamic between the verses and chorus with Adam's bass growling like a surly beast and Meghan channelling one of my all-time favourite drummers in Chris Hakius and his style in Sleep, OM and the short-lived The Sabians. She holds the pulse of the songs, doggedly driving forward with a snare that snaps with muscle. "Hammer" moves into some heavy psych territory with the main theme persisting, where Adam really coaxes some crazy out his instrument utilizing every inch of the neck and what I'm sure is an admirable pedal board. I can only wish to dominate my bass that way. On this track in particular he gets downright transcendent. He creates incredible atmosphere and Meghan's drum patterns are just as infectious as any riff.

"Giants in the Ice" is a sloburner rumbling and rolling with a lethargic pace befitting the title. It's quite the trip, easily drawing the listener into a state of bliss with their typical sinuous dynamics and blend of oppression and airiness. And Adam really lets it rip in screaming "Giants in the ice!" While still working within the soundspace it's their most straightforward track, leading into closer "The Serpent, The Smiler".

Meghan's tribal beats dominate the track with the bass getting eerie, whether quiet or loud. Adam shows off his vocal range here with cleans moving to gruff. He's moving like a wave, cresting and resting. All the while Meghan continues her cyclical movements to perfection. The track moves into a mind bender psych solo, and emerges with a renewed sense of percussive purpose driving a free-form sonic bass exploration eventually morphing into screams and a ferociousness on all fronts. Then it crashes out in a exhausted state.

Fortunate Some is a very welcome surprise in a year of quality doom. The duo have obvious chemistry with each member critical to the success of the other. They're subtly dynamic, shaping atmosphere when called for and bludgeoning when you need it. They have a way of shifting the sonic focus between themselves so the listener always has someone to love.

I'm a sucker for tone and I love the sounds both wrangle from their instruments. I'm also a sucker for duos. There's just something about the two-person band that makes a connection with me. It doesn't always work mind you but when it does, as is the case with BRC, it's a beautiful thing. Just you and me against the world, baby. Wielding hammers of course.

I can't recommend this enough. Honest, dynamic, psychedelic and forceful doom from two individuals who obviously live and breathe for their art.

I doubt I'd be able to talk the Mrs. into listening to this in the bedroom though. Giants, serpents, hammers, wind? Nope.
